artist's statement

Jock LangslowI am self-taught as a stone carver and have learnt some of what I know as a mason on site working with other stonemasons. For most of the last 17 years, I have worked from my studios carving towards exhibitions or working to commission. The stonework of Nepal and Wales drew me into the trade.

Architectural and historic stonemasonry as well as stone carving traditions informed my own work for more than a decade, as an informal apprenticeship. Relief carvings are a medium that have allowed me to draw on the past traditions as well as contemporary culture. The ancestral quality of stone, its enduring nature holds its own influence within the final design of my work.
